This is a service grade Model 1917 Enfield rifle Winchester 501.
Winchester Repeating Arms started manufacturing of the 1917 in 6-17. This was before the ordinance department told them the markings they wanted on the rifles. As a result, this serial number and others like it were marked with a larger "W" and a different "US" on the receiver than later production 1917's. This rifle has an Eddystone barrel dated 2-18. The muzzle gauge and throat gauges are both 1+. The bore is in good condition with little rust and/or pitting and is dark. This rifle has the original rust-blued finish, which is rare since not many exist with the original finish now, characteristic of early Winchester Model 1917 Enfields. The bomb proof marking can be found on the barrel, top of the bolt handle, and the side of the receiver. The receiver also features the circled star marking found on early Winchester Model 1917 Enfields. This rifle is missing the stacking swivel. A stamp of "R" can be found on the bottom of the bolt handle and bolt. A stamp of "E" can be found on the front sling swivel. Additional stamps can be found on the top of the receiver and part of the bolt. The wood of this rifle is GI with some dings, scratches, scrapes, and/or gouges. A stamp of "US" within a shield can be found in front of the trigger housing. Also, a stamps of "7" can be found on the front end of and "RA-P" on the side of the stock. The bayonet lug has a stamp of "W." The front sights are stamped "045" on top of them.
