This is a Springfield Armory .22 Cal M2 rifle 3498.
This is a nice example of the last of the series of the 1922 gallery practice rifles - the M2. The serial number indicates a production date of 1933 or 1934. The barrel is an S.A. 8-42. About 5,070 M2 Receivers were used in the manufacture of sub-caliber devices for use in the 37mm M3 anti-tank gun. When the M2's were returned to depot they were converted back to M2 rifles. This entailed the addition of sights and stocks. The barrel was also replaced if needed. They 8-42 barrel date is a new looking late barrel - it is 24" long instead of 24 1/2" of the earlier rifles.
The rifles' bolt is numbered to the receiver - it is marked on top of the bolt handle NS over M2.The headspace is very good and the rifling in the barrel is bright and shiny. The rear sight is the correct Lyman 48C and is clean with all the knobs easy to turn. The stock is the "issue" stock as it has the grasping grooves. It has a solid National Match butt plate, S.A. "P" proof on the pistol grip and S.A. over R in a box on the left side of the butt stock.
The rifle also comes with the rare original M2 five round magazine and a nice 1942 dated Boyt 1907 model leather sling.
