Winchester Model 70 rifle, chambered in 30-06. This rifle is in great mechanical shape, but has obviously seen heavy use. It has many scuffs and dings on the wood, and the blued finish is very worn in some areas. This rifle was manufactured in 1942 according to the serial number. This rifle features a 24 inch sporter contour barrel, with a ramp front sight and a dovetail slot for a leaf rear sight. This rifle has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The stock is a checkered sporter style stock with a very nice checkered steel buttplate. Stock has a crack down right side under action. Rear swivel is 1.25” wide, no front swivel. Pre-war type 3 position wing safety. Throat erosion was not gauged due to a lack of a M70 specific gauge. Muzzle gauges a 0+, with some light pitting in the bore
This is one of the 373 Winchester Model 70s acquired by the United States Marine Corps in 1942. It was acquired by the USMC to test as a possible sniper rifle, and was probably later used on a marine base as a hunting rifle that could be checked out by base personnel. This rifle is among the rarest of WW2 martial arms.
