This is a service grade Model 03-A3 rifle Smith-Corona 4871204.
In September 1943, Smith-Corona made a serializing error by transposing the second and third digits. Several thousand rifles were serialized before the error was caught and stopped. As a result, those several thousand rifles were released with unusually high serial numbers. This is one of those rifles.
It was returned and repaired at Rock Island Arsenal after World War II and exhibits Frank Krack's "RIA/FK" inspection stamp along with the original "FJA" stamp on the S stock of this rifle. The repair consisted of replacing the bolt and magazine cutoff.
This rifle has since been corrected with all Smith-Corona parts and has not been refinished.
The stock is a GI stock with some dings, scratches, and knicks; it is also stamped with "11" and "6" in front of the trigger housing, in addition to the DOD and proof markings.
The bore of this rifle is a 4-grooved SC 8 43 barrel in fair condition with rust and some minor pitting, but is still serviceable.
Muzzle Gauge: 1.5
Throat Gauge: 3
The rifle has good headspacing.
The front sight, magazine cutoff, and bolt sleeve are correctly marked with a stamping of "G." The extractor is marked with a stamped "S." The bolt is marked with a stamped "X."
Sold as is.
